So I went ahead with the f2p thing, made a dorf guardian, may invest some money into this game later on. Seems p-cool so far In an hour of Darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Insanity look to the madman to lead the way.

I tried this game a couple months ago. I unfortunately didn't make it past the first quest without getting bored. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

It is more PvE oriented In an hour of Darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Insanity look to the madman to lead the way.

I've tried twice--once during beta and when it went F2P--to try to get into LotRO. I really wanted it to replace WoW at the time, and then I really wanted to like it simply because I like LotR lore. But it just didn't happen. Besides being turned off by the heavy use of phasing in its storytelling, it just... felt slow. I just couldn't stay with it. To this day I wish I could get into it and stay with it but... bleh. And MMO's don't play well with the life of being a father of an infant.

I played it for a little bit when it first came out. I too found it a little too slow, not catchy enough. I haven't played WoW in a while, but I always find myself comparing MMOs to WoW whenever they come out. People will say, "It's going to be the next World of Warcraft!" and I wait to see if that will happen, but in the end, there's always something different about WoW that sets it apart as "better" than whatever game just came out. Conan, Warhammer, LOTRO, I can only play them for about a month before I get bored. At least, that's my opinion. However, all that aside, I cannot wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic to come out. Crappy or not, I will be buried in the game for as long as I can be :P I'm kinda a Star Wars fanatic, research the word "Mandalore" sometime if you get the chance. Let's just say I will spend hours on Wookiepedia in my spare time ;)

The Mandalore is the leader of the Mandalorians, who are typically a culture of semi-nomadic mercenaries and tradesmen who only unite for battle on the banner of the Mandalore. They craft using beskar ore, which is incredibly strong and used from everything from spacecraft to personal armor. It's also lightsaber resistant. In the most recent novels Boba Fett has assumed the position of Mandalore. I know a whee bit about Star Wars, myself. =P And KOR doesn't really interest me at all... heh...

Poor Gunslinger :( But I do plan on getting Guild Wars 2. I'm very much against subscription MMOs, but I find a box price reasonable. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

You might think differently if you worked in IT. The server maintenance and bandwidth costs for MMOs is extensive. I figure that the only way the makers of GW can afford it is because so much of the game *isn't* an MMO. I played some of the original GuildWars and my entire experience was single-player, arguably handled largely just by my computer and not central servers. P.S. Actually.. I just remembered that the creators don't even consider GW an MMO; they think of it as a CORPG. While it has a few MMO elements, such as multiplayer hubs, much of it is more akin to single-player Diablo.

Hmm, a valid point, but they're (read: Blizzard) still statistically making a fortune from the subscription fees. The guys behind gw2 said they'll keep the game funded via, cosmetic microtransaction, dlc, things of that nature In an hour of Darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Insanity look to the madman to lead the way.

Gunslinger wrote:The guys behind gw2 said they'll keep the game funded via, cosmetic microtransaction, dlc, things of that nature Yep. Basically a single-player game and a F2P MMO in one. The single-player game for the richness of content and, like any single-player game, only a box fee. And the F2P MMO microtransaction setup to pay for the few MMO aspects. It's actually a strategy still ahead of its time. F2P MMOs like Spiral Knights, FlyFF, etc., all rely on getting enough people playing that there are enough willing to make microtransactions. That can be tough since the games are typically pretty shallow and don't usually attract serious gamers for any length of time. GW, however, gets its audience by providing a thorough single-player game. An audience that will undoubtedly lead to many people willing to use microtransactions. It's a brilliant strategy, really. It works for them and it works for the players better than probably any other model. Slightly worse is having to pay a box fee AND a monthly subscription. That seems kind of ridiculous, if not unethical, to me. Then you have the ones that are TRIPLE dipping. A box fee, a subscription fee, AND microtransactions. I'm looking at you, Star Trek Online. Personally, though, I still like EVE's model the best.

GW2 isnt JUST single player, there will also be PvP and World vs World vs World servers. the WvWvW servers will work more like a strategy game in which players will fight over resources, outposts etc In an hour of Darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Insanity look to the madman to lead the way.
