Well, now that I am earning money for the first time since 2009, I'm going to work on building a new computer. I already have a general idea of what I want for the components, but what I'm curious about is monitors... I'm seeking input for choosing between getting a HD television around 32 inches or an actual monitor that's...you know...actually for computers. The monitor I use now is a 17" sqaure-ish (non-widescreen) LCD and it just won't be good enough for what I plan to build. I was looking at a 120 Hz LED-LCD that piqued my interest until I read reviews that said it will only operate at 60 Hz if connected to a computer, even with HDMI cables. I know there are more important things than refresh rates when it comes to display. I'm just looking for people's thoughts/advice for an awesome display. And if ya'll want info about what I'm going to build, here's what I'm planning: AMD Phenom ii X6 1090t (with appropriate MOBO of course) Dual Radeon 2GB 6950s Probably 12 GB RAM a 1TB HDD 800W Power supply ...And any other bells and whistles that will let me run the beast for a looooooooong time. Just to put it in to perspective, I bought my current PC back in 2004 (it's a P4!! Woooo!) and have never had any major problems, mostly issues with needing to update drivers. In other words, I plan to keep it in good shape HAHA stupid horse, the sign says Deer crossing Cantrip wrote:For all you know, you may have been dessert on a day-long cock-feast.

Nice CPU choice. I approve. I have a Phenom, myself. Overkill on video cards, IMO, but I've always taken more pride in finding cheap, awesome cards than in having expensive uber-awesome cards. That's a whole lot of RAM, but RAM is good. And quantity will help you stay relevant as quality increases over time. I'd get a bigger HDD, but I have a lot of movies and ISOs. Really a NAS is nice for hardcore, redundant media storage, though. Regarding a monitor... I like having a monitor and television separate, in case I want to watch something while playing something. Or if someone else wants to watch something while I play something. Or vice-versa. Strength in numbers or something. For a monitor I'd highly recommend Dell. I know. Weird. I was introduced to their 24" at work and ended up buying one for home. They have larger sizes, too, but I find 24" is perfect for where it sits on my desk. If you look at the 24", go with the "better" one. They have a cheap version in the $200's, but mines the ~$500 one. More inputs, card readers, and a USB mini-hub built in.

I know it's probably overkill on the vid cards, but when Elder Scrolls 5 comes out in November, I'll know for sure I can max it from the get go. HAHA stupid horse, the sign says Deer crossing Cantrip wrote:For all you know, you may have been dessert on a day-long cock-feast.

Gonna be pretty powerful, are you sure you can run everything on an 800 watt power supply? I'm not sure how much those vid cards use though. That is a glorious amount of RAM by the way. If you're really going for speed, you could get a SSD to install your OS onto. That would help speed things up. I agree with Rikaelus on the Phenom II. I have one of those as well, just a dual core though, but the black edition ones make overclocking easy, if you're into that sort of thing. Doubt you'd really need to though lol. I may have to look at that next time I do a round of upgrades needing an OS reinstall. Sounds like a nice idea, though I'd have to see some performance comparisons to see if it's worth the cost.

Yeah, I'd definitely look into a SSD for your gaming and OS needs. It doesn't have to be huge, like 120GB would probably be good enough. I'd definitely get as much HDD space as you can though. I've got almost 4TB and its still filling up. That is indeed a glorious amount of ram though. I'm definitely looking into upgrading my rig. I'm still not too convinced I need too big a HDD...My stock HDD that is with my Gateway system I got back in 2004 is a mere 250 GB, and I still have over 66 GB to play with...if it's a good enough deal I might go up to 1.5 TB HAHA stupid horse, the sign says Deer crossing Cantrip wrote:For all you know, you may have been dessert on a day-long cock-feast.

Thats a good point Shadow. Definitely get lotsa RPMs. My main one is 7200 and I can't complain much about it. I have 4TB cuz I've copied my DVD's and have a backup of my system and copy my Steam games to it when I uninstall them to save space on my main. Archiving is fun! I've been... acquiring things... for 15 years now. If it's worth buying I'll then go buy it, but if it's not worth buying I won't. So ultimately they aren't losing money on me, anyway. I think of it as a PROPER demo. But Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Star Wars: Empire at War... just a few I "demoed" before actually buying.
