Looking through the forums, I find that we have a lot of boards, and many really don't have that many posts, and I am planning on cleaning it up, so long you all think its a good idea.

My Plan:

Public Boards:
-IMPORTANT INFORMATION!/News: Merged into a super-news/info board (Kinda the same thing/Overlap)
-Console Gaming: merged into PC Gaming to make it just Gaming (Low post count)
-Arts & Crafts: Merge into a new Board called Culture (Low post count)
-This is Bat Country (NSFW): Merge into The Nyquil Bar (Low post count)
-Food Network: Merged into Culture (Low post count)
-Religion & Philosophy: Merged into Culture (Low post count)
-Literaturosaurus: Merged into Culture (Low post count)
-Technotrousers & Tech Support: Merged together to form one Tech related board (Lots of overlap/Low post count)
-Ask WDF? (NSFW): Axed (He left)

Private Boards:
-Merge the Moderator, Administration, and Admin forum into one big Important Person™ Board. All three have a lot of junk, aren't used much, and need to me cleaned up anyways.

I am open to other suggestions and ideas.

I would offer to take over the "ask" forum. Renaming it of course. Otherwise sounds pretty good-any issue with the bat country subject being in the other forum? I don't see it, but I know some might not like having the drug stuff mixed in elsewhere.

I think that is a seperate issue. Start your own poll :D

I don't see any issues, Bat country is pretty low volume, nyquil is already pretty bad, and most of the people posting in nyquil are the people posting in bat country.

To this day I don't know what half the forums are for without reading the full description. Clever names are clever, but not when they make site navigation more difficult.

So... +1 for more obvious forum names.

I've been watching all of the seasons of Southpark, and I finally found out the Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich is a reference to an episode about politicians and voting.

Yeah, cool references just... a little obscure to put in front of the general populace.

I like the idea of streamlining the forums - but could we please do it on a site where if it breaks, we have to wait for Sirius to fix it?

He's an internet celeb and all and he did that awesome job with saving the forums a few weeks ago. He's like Scruffy, the janitor. Never seems to do anything at all, and probably is masturbating all day.

...where was I going with this?

Anyway, I vote for a different forum engine thingy. For goodness sake, half of the header on the site still doesn't work.

Working on it, working on it...
Forum streamlining now remains valid, though. When we go to move everything over we'll have it nice and streamlined already.

I think we should just break down and run a futaba already.

I think you might touch on a more interesting point than you might realize. Is WDFNews really for the general populace? Personally, I don't think so. A lot of people that come here find we're a bunch of incendiary internet assholes (which I quite like) sprinkled with incessant carebears (which I like from time to time) and those that dig it stay, and those that don't...don't.

People should ideally be drawn to the site for things other than the forums. The forums themselves, however, are the community. Us. You, me, and everybody else who you see here--and not anybody else. Whoever feels the forums need to be dumbed down to either increase traffic or decrease hassle is pointing the fix-it gun at the wrong target.

We need content before we need to fiddle with these forums YET AGAIN. There's a whole "Articles" button that is seeing a lot less use than it could be.

Mhm, doesn't change the fact that a forum name is pointless if you have to read the entire description to understand what the forum is for. =P

We're foremost a gaming site and not all gamers watch Southpark or the other shows and movies the current witty names come from. It's safe to assume people who come here know games... but in other matters we need to assume they're "general".

I personally would like to see some new faces, not that I don't mind our current group of peeps, but it would be nice to get some different personalities in here. I say make it more accessible for the public, I mean, who here would actually leave the forums because of the layout?

I've been working on a program to convert parts of YAF (users, boards, posts) to PHPBB or something like that, but its not a simple process. To go much further, I am going to need to have more access to the server, which I contacted sirus about a couple of days ago. I haven't heard anything back. Ultimatly, I think we will have to make due with a series of stop gaps, like cleaning up the forums, until we are ready.

It's definitely on the agenda to make another run at getting people, and I'm open to suggestions as to how. With registration working correctly now we can really look at trying to get new peeps at any time, if they can deal with the flux-ish state of things.

One thing Whut actually suggested is that, once we move, we rebrand the site. I think he's cool with us using WDFNews.com and all but he sees the name as a vanity thing and thought we might seek greener pastures. I'm not sure where I stand on that idea. A fresh start has its benefits, but so does keeping with a name that's known in at least a few gaming circles.

Agreed. Sirus said he could provide a database dump when the time comes... is that what you'd need, or are you at the point of having to look at code to figure out what's what in the DB schema? I know first hand that DB schemas can be less than self-explanatory without seeing the corresponding code that uses it.

leave -Ask WDF? (NSFW):. Even if he left this still IS his legacy. At the very least don't allow new posts but keep it as an archive for future funny references.

I own pdsclan.net and I'm willing to donate it to the cause.

Yeah, I need a dump at minimum. The forums are based on YAF, which I believe sirus has customized to some degree. I doubt that he would change the database schema that much, so hopefully, I'll be able to use that.
