All I read was "VALVE SELLS OUT". Does this make me a pessimist, or just a cynic? Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

Why is this selling out? Is anything not involving the source engine and first person shooting a sell out for valve? Personally, I think this is a good idea, especially if it's well executed, which valve products usually are.

Ep.3 is their ace-in-the-hole. It's fucking done already, and Gabe Newell is sitting his fat ass on it right now, ready to hit the "UNLEASH" button in case DOTA tanks. Safety + Peace

I think that Episode 3 will be released after they overhaul the Source engine. If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack

Having been following Valve since my days at CS 1.5. My best bet would be that they are simply holding out Episode 3 and reveal some news right out of their pants as we stare in shock and awe of the moment. I can guarantee you that Episode 3 is most likely done. The fact just remains as to the reason they are holding out on us. I smell something BIG coming out of Valve during / at the time of Portal 2 release. In the end I think they are going to spiral and twist EP3 with Portal 2 somehow. ahhhh_crap wrote:no, splinter has ethics and whut has emotions

Splinter wrote:In the end I think they are going to spiral and twist EP3 with Portal 2 somehow. The potential for references are at least there, since the Half-Life folks are going after an Aperture Science vessel, but my hopes of any kind of crossover are fading. I know the timeline and number of passing years is uncertain, but it feels like Portal 2 takes place a decent amount of time after HL2 events.

Seemed like the opposite to me...after all, the original Portal has those slideshows that show competing with Black Mesa, I think it's actually prior to Half-Life 1. Trololol. If this ever happens, I'd probably consider it the equivalent of Valve selling out. They're trying to cash in on the market instead of doing something new and unique. Their last new IP was Left 4 Dead, and that's already getting milked for its worth. I sure sound bitter in my old age, huh. Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

Counterstrike was a mod DOD was a mod Portal was a digipen student project Left 4 dead was an indie studio project Alien swarm was a unreal mod or something Valve succeeds by identifying promising or successful mods or projects, bankrolls the development and hires the teammembers, and polishes it with their in-house teams. They essentially scout the minor leagues for talent. It's not selling out. It's worked so far. Just because they are working off an rts framework now everyone gets their butts puckered. Quote:

All of the above are shooters in one way or another. "Playing out of position? THAT AIN'T THEIR GAME." They're going where the money is. If id decided to make a fantasy RTS game, I'd say the same thing. Something doesn't seem right about the whole picture. Win Cookies Awarded: 7 (bawwwwww)

My impression is that Portal 1 takes place during the Combine occupation. This is for two reasons... - At one point GLaDOS mentions Chell wouldn't like the outside world; that she's better inside - I think it'd be odd for the facility to remain untouched and operational if people freely roamed the earth As for Portal 2, someone from Valve is on the record saying that Portal 2 takes place "hundreds of years" after Portal 1.
