My hopes aren't high given past activity even during our glory days, but... IRC bots is one thing I've never toyed with before and now seems as good a time as any! So! I've (re-)registered the #wdfnews channel on the Gamesurge IRC network and idle it 24/7 with my little bot friend that will continue to be developed over the coming days. If you're the type that has a computer on 24/7, consider idling on it yourself! I do so from my office workstation so will be semi-available during office hours, but will reply to anyone... even if it takes a few hours. Enjoy! If you want to... if not... I'll only cry a little bit.

Good luck, i tried that 6 months ago, it didn't work. IRC is slowly dying. And besides, any time we need to hold a community chat, we do it in the steam group chat.

Blow. You. Trying to build quizes into my own bot, actually. It nearly functions except for response time problems.. hoping to get those sorted. I remember some of the annoyances of the old bots. So far this one will: - be case insensitive - support multiple answers (for small variations) - have different categories - allow configuration of the number of questions, number of hints, and delay between hints - be able to run multiple quizes at once in different channels (such as private messages) - points based on answer complexity, modified by how quickly it's answered I like my pet projects =P

Steam chat is still best for that sort of thing since most everyone would have it available at meeting time. IRC is good for those of us who are online 24/7. I'm always on IRC for my job, for instance... so it's a small matter to connect to another channel. I can't always be running Steam at work.

Well...I know it's a voice chat thing...right? No voice chat. IRC predates that sort of thing. It's a chat protocol that's been around since... a long time. As such it's crude. No pretty pictures, really no sounds. It's your lowest common denominator for chatting, which is why it's still used, mostly in technical professions.

Blow. You. Our 'lil wdfbot's quiz engine should be functional now, but of course it's only been tested a little bit. So have at it! I still have some bells and whistles to add to it but the basics should be there, and I loaded it with a dump of trivia files I found on the net. That said... they're not that great. And just through my meager testing I've found incorrect answers. *sigh* One little command to help with that is .quizcomplaint, which you can use to log any problems you find with the questions/answers as they come up. The complaints are databased and I'll keep an eye out for them. If anyone knows a good source for trivia question/answers, let me know. P.S. If/when the quiz stats database fills up some I'll work on adding a "Top IRC Quizzer" announcement on the Grinder/L4D2 servers, similar to the current "Player of the Week". Nothing like cross-selling! 'couse... I could probably just make a static one with TripleBam on it and call it a day. >_> Addict.

I idle here. I think the bot should post server status automatically ever so often. [13:58] TheSpaniard84: I have a kitty stuck to my rump [13:58] WhuTdufK: I suppose that's better than what's normally stuck to your rump.

I think the bot should post server status automatically ever so often. Easily doable. Any command that can be issued by a user can be run automatically at any given interval. The .welcome command was running hourly and I just updated it to only output if new people have come in. What interval do you want the status? Should it be limited in any way, ie. only when people are online, or only show the servers that have current activity?

30 mins to an hour... I think 30 mins is enough for it to still not be considered spam. [13:58] TheSpaniard84: I have a kitty stuck to my rump [13:58] WhuTdufK: I suppose that's better than what's normally stuck to your rump.

WDF? wrote:30 mins to an hour... I think 30 mins is enough for it to still not be considered spam. It's at 30 minutes now, but only shows servers with active players. I had it set for an hour overnight with it showing all servers and, as expected, my window was filled with them come morning. That's what I was thinking about in terms of "spam". I can set it back to show them all if that's not a problem.
