In contrast to other mixes I've been listening to recently, the differentiable factor that The Illuminist brings is a lack of fear to sit on a beat and just enjoy it. There is often very little stylistic contrast between movements creating a very smooth experience. One statement flows logically into the next, as though telling a story in multiple parts. This is not one of those mixes that grabs your attention, grips you by the eyeballs and face fucks you with. No, instead this is the easy listening one would expect from a support character; it is the cleric of the party, the tuba of the marching band, the key grip of the set. One might suggest that it perfectly matches the nature of its author. Painter. Creator. Whatever have you.

Both styles, the eyeball-grabbing face-fucking and the tuba-playing key-gripping medic, have their place and time. This review is by no means to suggest that one should dismiss this mix in favor of the latest Tiesto mix or Kaskade's latest eurotrampfest. I would place this mix at the top of my list of shit to listen to while gaming, reading, writing (creative flow would be best for action sequences and the surrounding climax and denouement) and definitely to help induce an intrinsic zen-like introverted trance during a great smoking sesh.

The piece far improves upon its predecessor first and foremost by cutting the timeframe literally in half. It is much less the daunting beast. Give this a spin and just let it roll while you go about your duties. Game, work, drive (might I suggest a Griffin iTrip for your iPod?) and anything else you've got going on. Honest feedback has been solicited.

As far as criticisms, I really have none. This is the second beat to drop by the artist, not counting "What Can You Do For a Busy Child?" and it's clear that a series of themes are approaching. It feels lackluster in the area of confidence and balls; i.e. what do you REALLY want us to listen to? I feel like each movement is just shy of telling us the whole story, of pushing and pulling my emotions using just the right combination of strings. Don't be afraid to be down and downright dirty throughout the entirety of your mix. You've got 90 minutes of my attention, you'd might as well rock every second of it.

I expect the next piece will more than likely be more solid in terms of style and clarity of idea. The pieces used to comprise the mix will be less generic in sound and more broad in terms of originating tempo and sources of enlightenment (think Strongbad's "The System... Is Down.... The System... Is Down..." Is it so bad to just repeat a movie line over and over? Not everything has to come from well known techno groups.)

I like this mix a lot, overall, and look forward to the next generation.
