I realize this is relatively "old" news in internet terms. But here you go. Its official.

AUGUST 5th, 2009

"Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.

We will share more details about the beta, Battle.net, and StarCraft II’s launch in the future. Keep an eye on the official website at www.starcraft2.com for updates, and as always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for StarCraft II and all of Blizzard Entertainment’s games."

Why waste time and energy on something that people will play a flat rate for to play for free online when they can sit on their ass and keep pumping out WoW expansions that people pay monthly for? I can see Blizzard intentially doing this so that the WoW players don't abandon ship for something that doesn't have a monthly fee.

I don't actually give a shit about starcraft 2, but I consistently act shocked and offended whenever anything negative is published about the game or it's development, largely because I feel obliged to as an otherwise dedicated gamer.

So you should be equally pissed off at Valve for "wasting time and energy" on Steam even though all of the games are flat rate? (not sure if that's a fact) That sounds like hypocrisy to me!

I played it at PAX tbh its an expansion pack with new graphics. which is fine, but tbh blizzard killed it with
-making 3 games with a campaign for each race
-taking out LAN
-constant delays
-making toss the last one to come out (although I guess that makes it more epic)

Blizzard got really fuckin lame when they made WoW, tbh.

Since when does Valve produce a game that over 12 million people pay 15 dollars monthly for? If I was a high ranking official at Blizzard I would obviously want to keep that gravy train rolling for as long as possible before releasing somethiing that could become equally popular.

Regardless I've never been a fan of Starcraft but it seems that Blizzard is trying the patience of the fans who have been waiting 10 years for a new installment.

I think you and James are both wrong. Blizzard's development strategy, I have read, is to develope a concept to almost its fullest potential before making a decision on whether or not to keep it. That said, they will spend weeks developing, polishing, and put on all the bells and whistles only to step back from it and say: Naw it just doesnt work.
Think of it like a sculpter who has a statue and he wants to have the right arm held high above the head...well he carves and carves and polishes it. He gives each muscle in the arm its definition, every subtle detail given character...then, it's completely done...and then he decides no, i think i want that arm held down to the side now. So he smashes the fucking thing and starts on a new arm.

To me its ass backwards, and a waste of development money and time; its the real reason it has taken so long since the game was even announced. (the 3 years off for wow affected it as well, but god they had the basic mechanics of the game running in 2007)

Excellent point Giller but I refuse to accept it simply due to the fact that something similar killed Duke Nukem Forever. I don't want more vaporware =)

It's a semi-common development strategy with titles with open ended development windows. Valve did the same with TF2 as we all know, and admittedly, I do the same with my own game VHEL. It's stupid from a conceptional standpoint because you have to look at what you want and what you actually made, and ultimately decide if you've just made pure shit or not. Limiting that window of development is what's really important, in my honest opinion, otherwise you get carried away. In the case of Duke Nukem Forever, that game was trying to be "the next best thing" with the it's team constantly changing engines and game mechanics because it wasn't "up to snuff". That's technically what you're not suppose to do when making a game for obvious reasons (Hey everyone! I have a game being made for the Playstation 7!)

In regards to Starcraft, I played a lot of it, even now, but I'm only marginally excited about it's release right now. The idea of tying the game to the internet with no alternative LAN component just seems long winded to me. Sure, Value has it's Steam, but at least you can play via LAN without Steam authorizing the action. =P
