I dunno if it varies by state but if so any Washingtonians recently get a license? The thing is I don't have any driving experience besides a John Deere but I'm not getting a car anyways, I found an ad on Craigslist for a 2008 Tomos LX moped and the guy said he's cool with waiting until I get a license. I don't think I'll need to go to a driving school because I'm not really trying to drive a car, but I should know what the laws are and whatnot so I think I'll just take the test? I'm really just trying to find out what to expect, hopefully I'll go to the DMV this friday. BTW, this is what my possible future ride will look like: I love how they add the plastic to make it look like a motorcycle. I'm thinking whatever I get I want to paint it flat black with yellow stripes, like a bee. This thing has a 49cc engine which IIRC means I'm not legally obligated to have insurance. My parent's aren't really thrilled with the idea especially my Dad who was hit by a drunk driver when he used to ride a motorcycle. TBH I'm thinking it's a little sketchy to be riding w/o insurance, too.

So I just got my driver's license today, and am therefore qualified to discuss this. First, you gotta pass a written knowledge exam. Go to your local DMV/DOL and grab the little booklet. Read it front to back, no skimming. I failed three times because I didn't actually read the little thing. Then, you schedule a driving exam. This is where an examiner will physically sit in the car with you and direct you about town, occasionally telling you to stop or park or whatever. I failed my first time. If you fail, memorize what you did wrong and try to practice the route a few times. If you fail it once, you have to wait a week before you can try again. Normally, you can schedule your next appointment immediately after your first attempt. If you fail twice, you have to wait no less than three weeks. So hope you get it on the second try. I remember the driving test very well. The examiner set me up, she told me to change lanes in front of the car next to us. Except to do that I had to accelerate over the speed limit. Instant fail. Second time I took it the instructor was chill and barely did anything but tell me where to turn and compliment me on my parallel parking. Oh yeah... you will have to parallel park to get your drivers license. That freaks a lot of people out, don't be one of them. The examiners hate it when people start to freak out, unless you freak out in a really funny or novel way. Then they it will get added to the catalog of stories at that DOL location. I've spent a lot of time in DOL offices for various things over the past few years, they are a strange bunch and see a lot of strange shit. I remember talking to my examiner about people freaking out, she said the worst ever that she experienced was a 16 year old girl in her expensive brand new car who didn't even make it out of the parking lot before she crashed the thing. I actually didn't have to take a drivers test at all, just a written exam. However, in Texas if you pass a driving school class then you don't need to complete a behind-the-wheel driving portion of the actual test. {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

They give you a license immediately if you pass. It's paper. You get your legit laminated one in the mail 4-6 weeks later. Both tests are easy. I passed both my first time. Read the damn book even though it's fucking stupid. The test questions are set up to handle the technical aspects of driving, as well as the "if you come to a ____ and there is a ____ what do you do?" The physical driving exam is a bit tricky depending on who you get. I passed my first try with a 96%.. only screwing up backing around a corner. If you are 18 or over, you do not need to take drivers ed. It is, however, a benefit. Two reasons. One, it actually teaches you the shit in the book. Two: Insurance rates are significantly less. Make sure the car you take the exam with is flawless. No lights out. Current tabs. They check all of that. I'm just going to ask the obvious: Do you need a license for driving a moped?
In Canada I don't think you do. But that's 'cause mopeds are generally faster than beavers, moose and geese and maple syrups and the half-paralyzed Prime Ministers that block up our roads here. (Wink)

If you were in CA, you'd need a Class M license (motorcycle) to operate a moped. Class C license are for regular drivers. Class A is for >4 wheeled cars. But this doesn't help you whatsoever. silverwasp wrote:Be careful what you wish for... I have 10 younger siblings and I am only 20....

(Wink) It varies by state. Washington has some pretty strict laws, you need everything but a motorcycle endorsement. In Montana you don't need shit. I know a few guys who ride mopeds and they say usually you can play dumb if a cop ever pulls you over.
