Overlaying the number of players connecting to the servers illustrates how nasty an effect these bad servers are having on players. The very worst servers attract a large number of connections, mostly because they're lying in ways that make them look like a very attractive server at all times.

Our first step in improving this part of the player experience has been to delist all the really bad servers. The master server will simply stop giving these to you when you fire up the serverbrowser.

Looks like Valve will penalize servers that have fake player counts. Eventually, they won't even list them anymore. Eek!

Now I've never loved the fake player counts. But I don't see why they propose such a big threat to prompt such a big move. Discuss.

I keep getting logged out when I post.

It's not that simple though.  It doesn't just affect player plugin servers.  In other words, it hurts servers that hold reserve slots that kick automatically upon connection as well.  As long as you don't piss people off and make them leave automatically, you'll be fine.  Keep people coming back and you'll never be delisted.

Also, I'd rather a personal blacklist feature over this.  It's a lot easier, I can customize which servers to blacklist, and I don't have to wait for the "fate" of the server in the future.  Oh well.

I don't like the fake player count at all.  I don't see the purpose.  Others may enlighten me.

Just my opinion.

I think the biggest problem are the ones that not only fake player counts, but ALSO fake players - so when you get player details on the server, instead of an empty list like ours gives, you get a full list of players, scores, connect times, ping times... and then you connect and it's completely empty. I also think servers that break auto-retry with reserved slots that aren't hidden are also detrimental to gameplay.

I'm sorry but these forums are the biggest POS out there. I've had to try posting this 6 times already.

I ALWAYS Ctrl+C my posts before attempting to submit them.  Always.

I'm also pretty strongly against the fake player counts, regardless of whether it's just showing false player #s or whole fake players (that to me is splitting hairs).  I understand the reasons behind it, and it shows the relative idiocy of much of the player base that they would, as a whole, continually fall for that.

It's all cost vs. benefit.  The potential cost of being seen by some as a bad server for showing fake player numbers has until now (to Whut at least) been outweighed by the increased traffic on the servers.  This new move by Valve, IMO, ought to cause us to reconsider that.

I wouldn't mind the fake player count so much if it was back down at the low number it used to be but having it 12+ is just way too excess.

I say we lose the count , its been pissing off clan members and players alike for a long time

This i never understood, How is this good for our servers

If i join a server with a fake player count , its empty. i remove it from my history and finds a new server to play on

A lot of people do this, HOW is that good for tempests and our donations?

Wow, they do actually care?  It seemed evident to me they were striving to make anyone with half a brain hate the game.

That said,

The reason we added the playercount was because the server wasn't getting enough exposure. This update fundamentally changes the way servers are exposed. Therefore, the playercount is no longer necessary, and would now become an active detriment to the servers. I say this as a previous supporter of the playercount fix.

1 vote for the removal of the playercount plugin.

Well, it was a good run.

If we cannot maintain the current popularity of the tempest servers...I am going to need about 15 volunteers to wage a connection sabotage campaign on the successful servers....spending a few eveings just connecting and disconnecting until thier scores are so low they fall off the map and the only real option listed is the tempests.

You all onboard?
