Actually, I'm glad you posted something like this. Luap and I were just talking about racist Steam names last night.

Give them the console command to change the name in-game. name "ThisIsMyNameNow" Tell them to change it. If they don't comply, kick. If they come back, ban. Safety + Peace

that particular person has been extremely compliant with me in the past. I've merely told him to change it or I'll help him go elsewhere, and he changes it with no fuss. For what it's worth, I almost always will simply warn a racist/abusive name and then if they get fussy, they get kicked. If they come back and start a fight, then the ban hits.
The only time I get leniant with the abusive names is with the usage of the word Rape. As much as I hate how common this word is used in game, I have to accept that it's just common usage. So unless the name is extremely offensive, just having that word usually isn't enough on its own.
But yea, racial slurs are unnaceptable. That rule is not limited to texting in game, it applies across the entirety of the game as far as I read it.

G.I. Jew isn't an insult against anyone as far as I can figure. It's just thanks to the nazi-like tactics of the anti-semites in the US that we just naturally get concerned at the word Jew. Unless there's a hidden conotation to the name, G.I. Jew to me just reads "general issue Jew" or "jewish soldier". I can't find offence with either of those, right?
There's some other guys out there with Jew included in their name, but that word isn't an insult in and of itself, it can only be an insult when mixed in context. Just like Jap....yea, calling someone a jap can be an offensive slang insult, but a person who considers themselves and their family japanese may refer to it in the shortened version.
But that's just my take, I'd really like to hear Endyss's viewpoint thanks to his education.

i always thought the policy about racism was a bit harsher on our servers, but maybe it's mellowed out over time. it used to be a warning, then another warning with threat of banning, then ban (usually permanent). we used to have almost zero tolerance for racism. i don't know how WDF? wants it now  Cantrip wrote:When I die, I want to be reincarnated as a woman's jogging bra.

well, yea.....that's the context applying into the word then. I mean the usage of just the word "japs" isn't always derogatory. A good friend of mine is japanese, his father and entire family was locked up during ww2, yet he will refer to his family as being full of "japs". Of course this isn't meant in any offensive manner, nor is it the same sort of slang usage that the N word gets (he's in his early 50's).
But yea, I didn't mean to say that context should be ignored, anyone using that preclude to almost any word repeatedly is just looking to be disruptive.

I think it's a matter of disruption more than pure usage. We could easily take a no-tolerance stand on that or anything, but there's a difference in my mind between someone who joins the server with a name like "[BOSS NIGGA]" but is otherwise a normal player, and someone who spews racist, homophobic crap over chat or mic (or even if the name is so bad it offends people... I could think of a couple). Our job is to prevent disruptions, not to try to make everyone model citizens. "Keep the servers running smoothly and the players happy", as opposed to "Make every moment family friendly and every semi-anonymous player that joins sweet and hugable."
