REPORTING A CHEATER/RECORDING A STEAMBANS DEMO:
There are some really simple steps that you can undertake in order to get the best possible demo.

Before we start it is important to be aware of that the higher the ping you have the larger the margin of error on the demo is. You should not be recording a demo on a server that lags you or if you are getting much choke/loss.

Second: be aware of how long you are recording. Each minute is approximately 2 megabyte of demo which will be around 500KB zipped. So take demos that are not longer then 5 minutes before recording a new one.

Let's move on.

Step 1
When you have located the player that you would like to demo be sure to get into a position where you can spectate him without him really noticing. If the server allows spectators you can record the demo from spectator-mode. If you either can’t spectate the person, or the server doesn’t allow spectators, you can "chooseteam" -> select a team, but do not select a skin. This way you will have spectating abilities, but not be forced to spawn each round. If for some reason the above doesn’t work, you can type "kill" in console when you spawn.
Note: The latter will alert a vigilant cheater so be aware not to draw to much attention to yourself.

Step 2
Once you have gotten into the spectating position start the demo by bringing down the console and typing "record [demoname]". The demo will appear in the hl2mp folder with the [demoname].dem. Be sure to follow the suspect/cheater all the time, do not "flip" between people to show where they are on the map compared to the suspected cheater. Should the cheater die before the round ends pick a random other person to spectate till he dies.

Step 3
After you have started recording you need to verify the ID of the player.. Bring down the console again and type "sb_status" [enter].

Step 4
The final step is simply to type "stop" in console when the 5 minutes of recording has ended, and if you think it is insufficient make a new recording taking the same steps once again.

Please submit all demos to any member of the WDFNews.com admin team. They will forward the demo on to steambans for you for review.

Please Note:

Demos that do not follow these instructions will not be a priority and will be viewed when we get around to it. Demos that do follow this protocol will be reviewed immediately and, if feel it's proof enough, will be submitted to steambans for review. If they suspect foul play, the player will be banned on all Steambans servers. Please follow these instructions.

Reporting a fuckwad who's ruining your fun:

Guidelines for reporting an abusive player:

1. Provide a date and time (as close as possible) of the event. This allows the admins to go back through the logs and get a better picture of what happened at that given moment.

2. If possible provide a screen shot and/or a demo of the offense. While we'd like to go off of blind faith it's always helpful to have a bit of proof. This is just to prevent a future flame war.

3. Provide a COMPLETE Steam ID. This will allow us to ban instantly if we find abuse has occured.

How a cheating accusation demo review works:

When an admin bans a player, they are logged in a thread that we keep in the admin forum.

If a player is banned for cheating, that report must also include conclusive evidence that is believed to prove the guilt of said player.

If the ban is disputed by said player, the demo is reviewed by the admin team as a whole to determine if in fact the evidence against said player is conclusive.

A discussion is held to determine the innocence or guilt of a player. It is a group decision, not a decision made by one person. If a decision cannot be made, I will step in and review the issue. Rarely does this happen, as generally the admins come to a decision as a collective.

This system is set up to do the best possible job preventing false positives.

Thanks for your cooperation.

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOURsteamACCOUNTNAME\team fortress 2\tf               Just wrong file they are in the tf

This is the file where dems are stored.

You don't add a .dem on your filename in console Mrs. M.  Just have to type "Record yourdemoname". (no qoutes)

Also Just "status" in console  also works and lists all ID's on server. If I ever suspect anything its the first thing I do. That way if you go into spectate and they disconnect you still got the ID number.

Even if you dont wirte the ID down right away you can scroll up and catch it after you make your demo.

It might also be pertinent that when making a thread here that the subject line have the offending players name instead of what they're accused of doing. It would make it easier to find if it comes in question.

If you are using steam bans, you have to use sb_status or it won't work.

Just for clarity...
What's the difference between the ID shown in "sb_status" and "status"? Is it incomplete with "status"?

When using steambans, you are making a demo for review by the Steambans workers. I'm not sure what the difference is, but I do know they require sb_status instead of status. If you are doing a regular ban for us, you can use status. but when you are recording a demo of a cheater, be sure to use sb_status.

It's just for them to check some stuff.

Don't use just "status"

Always use sb_status.

Well.. my reason for asking is that previously I just copy&pasted the person's Steam ID out. I presume, then, that we should copy the entire output for them? If SteamID is SteamID and it's other information they need, too... I want to make sure I'm grabbing the right stuff.
