http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.308968-Internet-Explodes-Over-Origins-Invasion-of-PrivacyI really don't even need to make fun of this company anymore , they are just doing such a good job themselves From them asking people to pay monthly to play their sports games, DRM fun times and now this .. From what i read on Reddit or whatever it seems people who were checking up on what it all watches it seems to be everything . Hardware and software not just related to origins or the game itself , it checks what programs you have on your whole computer So if you are getting battlefield 3 enjoy EA watching what porn you surf or what programs you use and know that they can then sell that info to others . Edit: Better news yet if you install origins and agree to it, even if you uninstall all the games and origin itself the spyware is still on your computer and will still send data.. yea for haveing to reformat your drive just to get rid of EA it doesn't change the fact that most people think Jews are much like the Ferengi of Star Trek. More interested in acquiring "profits" than anything else. -Erkdog
Shut the fuck up Frostbite, I know what i am doing i been playing TF2 for 8 fucking years i know how to run my damn servers-Erkdog
More pearls from Erkdog I say we let him back on the forums. lol epic

I was really looking forward to BF3, but when I found out about what origins is doing, I gave up on EA. That was the last straw. Sorry Mass Effect 3, I'll be either illegally downloading you or missing out on the conclusion to a great game series. I don't understand why DICE and Bioware give up on EA. its not like they don't have enough money, and they could just distribute on Steam anyway. Digital delivery is the future. Are they legally bound to EA or something? =\ If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack

Are they legally bound to EA or something? =\ I have ME1 and ME2 on Steam now. I wouldn't buy ME3 except through Steam, even if it means waiting a while. In fact... I doubt there's many games I'd buy not on Steam. The convenience is worth waiting for. Fortunately Skyrim is going to be released on Steam out the gate. On that note... I might buy Pirates! a second time so I can have it on Steam. Only $10 I think. Or $15. That's worth not having to dick around with DVDs to install and play it.

Bleh.. and I have another reason to hate EA. I bought Monopoly Streets for the PS3 so my wife and I could play, and the damn game has bugged autosaving, so I keep losing progress in my stats and earned money. This after nearly a year of being released.

Super Penguin wrote:Some board games are meant to stay board games. I don't know about Monopoly. I remember playing it as a kid on the board and enjoying it, but in retrospect the games would take FOREVER, and that was just with 2-3 people playing. Plus, you couldn't exactly play by yourself (against computer AI). In video game form, Monopoly is a lot more accessible. But it did make me reflect on the fact that I probably couldn't stand to play it on the board now, with all the money and tokens and cards and houses. I guess I'm more a member of my instant-satisfaction generation than I had thought.

The article here is rather editorializing. Origin isn't the only service that collects user data for various purposes, including marketing, but its TOS allow it to scan for an uncomfortably broad range of information. Here, in plain english, is what the ToS tells you about Origin's user data collection. It collects: Your IP Your OS Your applications Your software Some of your hardware (peripherals) EDIT: Only data related to Origin and Origin activity would be tracked, see new post It does: Nothing (to you) Use the collected information to streamline services and for marketing purposes. It's not collecting your documents or your internet files or perusing for piracy. It just wants to get to know you. For now. And, for my part, I just think BF3 is worth it. Safety + Peace

TripleBam wrote:And, for my part, I just think BF3 is worth it. It's still unethical for them to even demand that allowance in the contract as a condition to playing video games, and it's based on that principle that I refuse to install Origin and support others who likewise boycott it. The older I get, the dirtier I feel. It seems every few months I come to find a major company slipping fine print into contracts, or intentionally leaving things undefined as a means to gain something at the customer cost later on. I've even caught the company I work for do it a couple times, and if I wasn't the sole income of my family it probably would have been enough for me to quit after 8 years of employment there. Worse than that is the simple realization that this is the culture we've grown and are too complacent to protest in any meaningful way. Even if everyone who knows about this being in the Origin contract refused to download it, there'd still be millions who don't know. And EA will probably leave it as it is because it does them more good in marketing than bad in losing customers.

I'm with Rik. It was almost bad enough that in order to use Steam, we have to give up ownership of games entirely - i.e. we lease them. That's fine, its a trade off for convenience. I get to download my games wherever I want.mAt the best of times, TOS's are just legal ass-covering. They prevent jerkwads from suing the company for petty reasons. I can understand those. I refuse to voluntarily install spyware to play a few games that I like. There's no REASON for EA to track whats on my computer. No reason whatsoever, besides being able to sell it to marketing companies. On another note, apparently BF3 wont even support a server browser. WOOHOO! PS: Apparently EA amended their TOS to make Origins less spyware-like. If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. - Carl Sagan My Backpack
