Just read McCheese' and got to thinking...

Would strategic SSD usage make a worthwhile performance gain? Putting the *nix OS on SSD then everything else on HDD? Would it be noticeably helpful to have game servers run off SSD?

Any performance Nazis out there that can speak for SSDs in this situation? I'm a little hesitant to adopt a technology I'm not familiar with for the server, so I'd need some convincing, I think...

And bare in mind I'd want 2 for mirroring--especially if the OS is on it.

Sweet deal, don't worry about the Windows-ness. I'm sure there are probably ways to get around that if necessary. I'm not sure how the SSD would affect game speeds, but it's definitely a little more pricey. They do have a "limited" number of writes...so if this thing is getting constant use from a variety of sources, it might not be the best. I know they haven't truly perfected "sustainable" SSDs. Don't let me make it sound like they don't last though, I'm just not sure how well they'd do in a (constantly used) server. I don't know haha, it might be more worth it to put money into liquid cooling. Or lasers.

Eh, no need for liquid cooling. I'm not overclocking anything and servers have no need for fancy graphics cards, so there usual suspects for overheating aren't present. A decent case is able to circulate air well enough for what would be in the server.

And yeah.. I talked to a co-worker who knows more about hardware than I, and he doesn't think SSD's would be that valuable. He said that *nix OS' don't do a lot of disk writing--and neither would most games--so the only real advantage would be in read speeds, and then it's probably not enough gain to justify the cost.

The one thing that has me worried, though, is if we have really do have 8-10 games running at the same time, all reading from different areas of the same physical drive. Heavy multitasking like that seems like it'd put a serious burden on mechanical drives and probably reduce their life expectancy.

That said... another option is to have multiple, smaller HDDs, with the various game instances spread out across them. Less work for each of them to do.

Yeah, the liquid cooling was a joke lol.

I think that either route with the HDs will work fine. Hard Drives only keep getting bigger and their prices (for lower storage amounts) keep going down. So even if one should bust, it would be in the distant future and easy enough to replace.

So I did a window shopping trip for the state of server components and I'm kind of glad we're not ready to buy just yet. Server hardware seems to be in something of a crap situation.

With AMD 8-core CPUs surprising me being mainstream I thought maybe Intel server processors were up to that now. Well, they are... for ~$2000 a pop. Ridiculous. No idea why it's that much. And going with that level of tech seems to be the only way to get any SATA3 support, too, and that's limited to only 2 connections. Also crap.

Even if I found a $700 bill laying on the ground tomorrow, I'll probably want to wait until Intel's 8-cores come down. A lot. And SATA3 support improves.
