First my battery dies and I buy a new one... Then I take it in for routine maintenance... Then I have to get my transmission rebuilt... Then I get a flat tire and need a replacement... And now it won't start. All this within a 2-month period. What the fuck. But anyway... what do you guys think this is? When I open the door the internal lights come on, or slowly fade in (more below). I can turn the key to "on" and things light up, the radio works, etc. But when I try to start it, all power dies. After that the lights begin to come on slowly again. It's a bit different than any problem I've had before. Normally I'd think starter or alternator, but in the past those would either cut off power completely, or have sounds when trying to start. Mind you... that was on an old truck.. not anything this century. Of course I'm suspecting a jump-start won't help, but I'll be giving that a try. If that doesn't work then I'll be calling for ANOTHER tow truck. If I didn't have this thing paid off I'd really be considering a replacement. =/

I would start with the alternator and battery. They are usually easy to get out, and then get tested at a local parts store (autozone, pep boys, etc). Sometimes you don't even have to take them out....where i used to work we had an electrical analyzer that could determine that without removing anything. Of course you would have to get the car running to take it to a shop..... If that is okay, then move to the starter. Also usually an easy at home project (again...provided you can put it up on blocks and get under it as alot of starters are most accessible from under the car) If neither of those things are it...you probably need to have a mechanic look at it....electrical is always weird and can be a bitch to solve. From easy shit like distributor caps or spark plug wires, to some wierd electrical short somewhere that is a bitch to find. its probably just an alternator though. Quote:

Don't we have a specific forum for this sort of automobile oriented tech talk? I'm just saying....... And yeah, that's fucking right, even with the community in the state that it's in, motherfucking Endyss is still here to make sure people follow the forum rules! The first things that I would try would be to check your battery and clean any corrosion off the terminals and make sure the grounding strap is connected to the frame. If that makes no difference I would do as Giller said.

Ended up being something stupid. There wasn't any apparent corrosion on the cables, but the positive connector seems to be a bit touchy. Depending on angle of its connection, power may or may not pass through it. All I ended up having to do was tweak it's position and strap it down so neither it nor the battery can shift positions. Live and learn.
