I wouldnt call it a bug so much as poor programming decision. I assume it will get patched up pretty quickly but until then, I would do this. Better safe then sorry I say.
I actually had my game lock up in a menu, probably because of this heating issue.

StarCraft II Overheating Bug [Jul 30, 2010, 10:16 am ET] - 27 Comments

One of the listed StarCraft II Known Issues on the Battle.net Technical Support Forums is a bit of a doozy, as when rendering "screens that are light on detail" (such as menus), the game can cause hardware to heat up by refreshing the screen too frequently, which can put your system in jeopardy. The posting is from a couple of weeks ago, and the workaround they offer is clearly for the beta, but this known issue is also apparently still present in the shipping version of the RTS sequel, as a post on GameInformer.com describes the game's destruction of a graphics card and a laptop apparently thanks to this problem (thanks Ant via Digg). Here's the workaround for the beta, which will presumably work on the full game by using the proper directory:
Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly. A temporary workaround is to go to your Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt file and add these lines:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60
You may replace these numbers if you want to.

Always amazes me when they make games that can cause physical harm to a computer...

It's pretty bad Rik considering it happens more than you can imagine. Hell Nvidia released some drivers a few months ago for their Cards that caused the cards to fritz out. Good thing I'm an ATI/AMD man.

For games though it's inexcusable. While no PC game can be shipped perfectly I do expect major bugs and issues to be ironed out. Of course nowadays it seems they just try to meet the deadlines the publisher sets and ship a game that should have been in the shop for a few more months. *BF BC2 cough*

I call shenanigans. Any device in a computer that could be killed do to overheating SHOULD trigger a thermal event and shut down the computer. And refreshing the screen more than it should would cause strain on the cpu and gpu, but so does turning up the graphics quality a lot. I think that this is more likely affecting people whose heatsinks are not properly seated, have old harddware that is likely to give out, especially under strain, or have other issues.

Well... drivers from a manufacturer I can understand blowing hardware up. Their software would be closer to the hardware than any game software should be, and their drivers should provide safeguards to prevent games (and any other software) from pushing the hardware too far.

That's why this kind of thing bugs me. We all know games ship with bugs and while ones like these should be addressed well ahead of time, the drivers should always be there in the middle to soften the blow.
