I've come to realize that I die alot due to lag issue. Issues where a player melees me from a distance where in normal circumstances I would never be hit...or pyros reaching unbelievable distances with their flame...or getting killed by a player not even looking at me.

I have a decent rig, not top of the line, but very decent.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+
2 Gig RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT

I generally get about 30-40 FPS and the game seems to run fine until the heat of battle when something happens to make me think WTF?

I have been doing a little research on how to make the game run smoother and found some information on some custom autoexec.cfg files that could help, but I don't know the first thing about using these or if there are other settings I could try first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe more RAM. What OS are you using? If its Vista you should have 4GB of RAM, if XP, 2GB is ok.

Turn off all programs except the game and antivirus.

Defrag your harddrive.

Make sure you are free of spyware etc.

Sacrifice on quality item, like AS filtering and turn it down.

It might also be your internet connection, if yours it ok-ish, it might not be enough. I think when I was keeping track, tf2, in a large game, sucks up 2GB of traffic an hour which works out to something like 560kB/s so if your internet can't handle than then lag.

Other than that, I cannot help you because my rig is on the verge of being a super computer, so I just turn everything up to max and play with 60+ fps.

Here's my advice:

Don't make your game any smoother! You kill me enough as it is!!!

(Yeah - I don't know anything about this stuff).

You seem to be running a better rig than mine, yet I average 45fps, 25 in battle. For a time, the framedrops were getting really, really bad for me ( down to 8 fps ), but a few updates later, it was fixed.

For me, the biggest fps boost comes from lowering resolution. Depending on performance at the time, I'll usually play at 1024x768. All other settings are maxed. AA makes things much clearer.
