Pcplayer interview with David Adams and Joe Madureira from Vigil Games

How will your game deviate from other online games such as Warhammer age of Reckoning by EA Mythic?
David: The fact that Warhammer 40K is science fiction and not fantasy, makes it much different from other fantasy based online games. Beyond the clear visual differences, will the future scenario and some aspects of the gameplay. first and foremost will firearms play a bigger part in combat. The way you play will be much more intense and focus on firefights, tactics, cover and general brutality. furthermore will the enormous scale in warhammer 40k give the players whole new experiences. The definition of "battlefield" will get a whole new meaning!

The Warhammer 40000 universe is already very complex and developed. How will you make your game accesible for players who are relatively new to the Warhammer 40000 universe?
David: One of the reasons that WH40k is so successful is its built in cool factor. People, that just have learned about the WH40K universe, doesn't need to understand the Imperium or the ancient Eldars history to keep up with the game. The only thing they need to see is a couple of Space Marines fighting against hordes of Genestealers, or an Eldar Farseer fighting against a
Demon Champion of Khorne; then you are hooked, whether you are a WH40k Newbie or Veteran.

The board games focuses on group combat and tactics. How will you bring those elements over to the game?
David: Let me point out that this game is going to be a RPG. We have to get that clear. When people thinks of a Warhammer 40000 game, a lot of question are asked about the game genre: will it be a FPS, a RTS or a completely other genre? Relic covers the RTS genre pretty well, with their excellent Dawn of War series- we are making a RPG. That doesn't mean that this game wont be affected by certain aspects of the board game. As mentioned earlier, will ranged weapons hugely affect the way this game will be played. Stuff such as cover, suppressive fire and flanking will play a big role in combat.

How many races will be playable?
Joe: We are not ready yet to give a full list of all the races. But rest assured that all races that play a significant role in the WH40K universe will be represented. We do wish that playable races should feel different, so if we don't think a race will work well in the game, we will leave out of the playable section.

What c l a s s e s will you be able to play as? Will there also be social c l a s s e s?
Joe: We have planned tons of different c l a s s e s, but the final number will first be announced when we are finished with testing all of them and make sure they are balanced. The characters will be able to take part of non-violent activities, but you cant level a character without partly engage in combat.

I what degree can players costumise their units? will you be able to make your own Space Marine chapter? or Ork Clan?
Joe: We already have a system in place where you will be able to make very different looks on characters, and of course it wouldnt be WH40K if you wouldnt be able to place scrolls, chains, books, medals and all sort of stuff on your character.
Its to bad that i dont have pictures to prove it, but i think that we have made some of the most awesome RPG characters ever seen in a MMOG. That wouldnt be hard to understand as everything is over-the-top-badass in Warhammer 40000.

What types of npc´s will the player meet?
David: We want to make a WH40K world that stretches itself over the battlefield. that involves Cities, exotic alien temples, Chaos relics, abandoned battlefields, mysterius ruins, ancient structures, space hulks and so on. The game universe is filled with history, you get the feeling that these stars have seen armies huge enough that you wont be able to comprehend it. That is what makes this a place filled with adventure and excitement, but it is also an evil and merciless place where a single man is but a dot among a sea of stars. But those that manages to lift themselves up gets a lot more attention, and this is where the players enter. To return to the question, will all these magnificent places be shown in the game, Imperial Castles,
Chaos Sycophants, xenos, Deamons from the Warp, Eldar Craftsmen. Rouge Traders, ancient killing machines and much more. The game will be filled with NPC that are ready to help, and kill the player. What about vehicles?
David: We are not ready to talk about that but we are, but let us just say that we are very aware of their affect in the WH40K universe. How involved are Games Workshop i the development of the game?
David: Games Workshop are great at giving us the necessary feedback and information to ensure that we stick close to their universe.

What types of quests will you be able to play alone, and in groups?
Joe: We have a large number of solo-,group and Pvp quests. We dont want to force the player to play in groups, as other games have done- thats annoying. MMORPGs are about giving the player possibilities, and that means they should be allowed to play the way they want to. But some would like to have some buddies to cover their backs, especially in PvP missions. Yup there will be PvP and a lot of bloodspilling. After all this is Warhammer 40000, and there is only war.
In an hour of Darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Insanity look to the madman to lead the way.
